Music Therapy for Adults
Music Therapy for Adults
Adult life can be heavy. Stress, burnout, grief, illness, anxiety, relationship strain and big life changes can leave people feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck. Sometimes it is hard to explain what you feel in words.
Music therapy offers another way in. It is a professional therapy service where music is used carefully and purposefully to support emotional wellbeing, self-expression, coping, and connection. Music can become a safe bridge into therapy, especially when talking feels difficult at first
Who can benefit?
Music therapy may support adults who are:
-
feeling stressed, overwhelmed
-
living with depression or anxiety
-
coping with illness, pain, or fatigue
-
adjusting to major life changes
-
feeling isolated or disconnected
-
wanting a non-verbal or creative way to process emotions
-
rebuilding confidence or sense of self
Music therapy session can be gentle, reflective or more active, depending on what feels helpful. Sessions may include music listening, lyric discussion, singing, improvisation, songwriting, relaxation with music, and reflective conversation. Some adults connect first through listening and talking. Others find it easier to express feelings through making music.
Our music therapist, Preet, also offers Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) and is trained at Fellow level (FAMI). GIM is a specialised form of receptive music therapy. In a session, you are guided into relaxation and listen to carefully selected music while noticing images, memories, feelings, or body sensations that arise. The therapist supports the process and helps you reflect on what the experience may mean for your life and wellbeing
