How We Use Music in Therapy
Music therapy uses music in a structured and purposeful way to support health, development, and wellbeing. It does not require any musical background or ability. The focus is on how music can support each person’s needs and goals.
Improvisation — creating sounds using instruments or voice in a flexible and supportive environment. This allows emotions and ideas to be expressed without relying on words.
Songwriting and Composition — developing lyrics and music together to explore thoughts, experiences, and personal meaning in a structured way.
Receptive Listening — listening to music with guidance to support relaxation, emotional awareness, and regulation of the body and mind.
Re-creative Music Making — engaging with familiar songs through singing or playing, which can support memory, coordination, confidence, and connection.
